Upright
Tall and rectangular, strings run vertically, and it sits flat against a wall. Spinet (under 40″), console, studio and full-size upright.
Baby Grand
Horizontal, wing-shaped body on three legs. The smallest grand. Fits where a full grand won't.
Grand
Medium, parlor and concert grands. A longer body means richer bass and a bigger move. Often a multi-person job.
Vertical strings and a box that sits against the wall: upright. Strings lying flat under a raised lid: a grand of some kind.
With the lid closed, measure from the front edge of the keys straight back to the farthest tip of the tail.
Measure floor to the top of the case. Under 40″ spinet, 40–44″ console, 45–48″ studio, over 48″ full upright.
